Fiona Wood’s Inspiring Story

Professor Fiona Wood is one of Australia’s renowned pioneers of research and technology development in burns medicine. Professor Wood brings empathy, kindness, respect, incredible skill and dedication to her work. Professor Wood’s enduring legacy is her work pioneering the innovative ‘spray-on-skin’ technique (Recell). Recell works by significantly reducing permanent scarring in burns victims, a method patented in 1993 and used globally in burns units.

Professor Wood has been recognised for her role in two defining national events – the 2002 Bali Bombings, and the 2007 Garuda Flight crash in Indonesia. Professor Wood shares her desire to “focus on the positives, the doing and trying to make things better.” Throughout her career, Professor Wood has been recognised with an extensive list of accolades and achievements including Australian of the Year and the newly released biography – Under Her Skin – but to her being a mother to her six children is her greatest honour.
